Portugal works almost entirely with native grapes, which gives its wines a character found nowhere else. Beyond the fortified Ports of the Douro, the country makes serious dry reds from the same steep, schist-soiled valley, crisp low-alcohol Vinho Verde in the green north, and a growing range of distinctive whites.
