Collection: Classify This! Four French Bottles Worth Knowing

France's appellation system is the most rigorous classification in wine — over 360 protected designations that rank every vineyard, village, and region. That precision is the system's strength, but it also creates blind spots. Grower Champagne gets overshadowed by the big houses. The Côte Chalonnaise sits in the shadow of the Côte d'Or. Crozes-Hermitage plays second fiddle to Hermitage. Village Meursault gets walked past on the way to Premier Cru. This week's four bottles all punch above their classification — the labels undersell what's actually in the glass.
Egly-Ouriet Champagne Extra Brut Grand Cru NV draws 90% of its fruit from Ambonnay, one of Champagne's most celebrated Grand Cru villages for Pinot Noir. Francis Egly's grandfather arrived in Ambonnay after World War II with three hectares; the estate now spans 10 hectares of Grand Cru chalk across Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Verzenay. Francis took over in the early 1980s and converted to organic farming, reduced yields, and began barrel-fermenting all base wines. This cuvée blends the 2019, 2018, and 2017 vintages — 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay — co-fermented with indigenous yeasts in barrel (10% new), with no malolactic fermentation. After 48 months on the lees, it's disgorged at just 2g/L dosage, unfined and unfiltered. The nose opens with baked apple, crushed citrus, toasted brioche, and pear. The palate is full-bodied and layered, with chalky minerality, bright acidity, and a long, saline finish.
Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Mercurey Rouge 2023 comes from Les Doues, a 0.33-hectare parcel at the highest elevation in Mercurey — the Côte Chalonnaise's most important red wine commune, five miles north of Rully. Vincent Dureuil's family has roots in the region stretching back to the 13th century. He took over the estate with his wife Céline in 1994 and was named Bourgogne Aujourd'hui Winemaker of the Year in 2013. Les Doues is east-facing, planted on limestone and clay, and farmed organically. Whole clusters and indigenous yeasts drive fermentation before 12 months in barrel with 33% new oak and a further 6 months in tank. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine delivers red cherry and earth on the nose, with a structured, site-specific palate built on a firm limestone-driven backbone.
Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage 2023 is the flagship of the domaine that put Crozes-Hermitage on the fine wine map. Alain Graillot founded the estate in 1985 after an apprenticeship with Jacques Seysses at Domaine Dujac in Burgundy. He bought 20 hectares on the alluvial gravel plain between the Rhône and Isère rivers — sand, gravel, and river stones at Les Chênes Verts near Pont de l'Isère. Alain passed away in 2022, but sons Maxime and Antoine have run the domaine since 2008 with the same approach: hand-harvested, 100% whole cluster, fermented on indigenous yeasts in concrete, aged in one-to-three-year-old Burgundy barrels. The 2023 scores 94 points from James Suckling and 91-93 from Vinous. Dark cherry, spiced plum, wild herbs, pencil shaving, and licorice on the nose — medium-bodied with fine tannins, salty iodine minerality, and a long, vivid finish.
Domaine François Mikulski Meursault 'Le Limozin' 2023 comes from a 0.15-hectare parcel of 65+-year-old Chardonnay wedged between Premier Crus Les Genevrières, Les Charmes, and Les Porusots on Meursault's southeast-facing slope. The lieu-dit is named after a stream that once ran through it. François Mikulski founded the domaine in 1992 with his wife Marie-Pierre — the daughter of François Germain of Château de Chorey-lès-Beaune — after years working for his uncle Pierre Boillot in Meursault. The vines are farmed organically (uncertified), fermented with ambient yeasts, and aged 12 months in barrel with 20% new oak. Only about 600 bottles are produced. Expect pear, citrus oil, white flowers, and hazelnut on the nose, with a broad, mineral-laced palate and a long, creamy finish.
