Founded in 1850 by Giovan Battista Burlotto in the historic commune of Verduno, this legendary Piedmontese estate achieved extraordinary fame during its founder's 77-year winemaking career (1850-1927), rivaling only Biondi-Santi and Vega Sicilia in global recognition. G.B. Burlotto pioneered bottling Barolo (rather than selling in casks), served as official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy, and famously provided wine for the Duke of Abruzzi's 1899 North Pole expedition. After decades of obscurity following the founder's death in 1927, the estate has reclaimed its position as one of Piedmont's great small producers under the stewardship of Fabio Alessandria, G.B.'s great-great-grandson.

Today's Burlotto operates across 16 hectares in four municipalities (Verduno, Barolo, Monforte d'Alba, and Roddi), with their crown jewel being the 2.02-hectare Monvigliero vineyard entirely composed of laminated marls of Sant'Agata Fossili—complex fine sediments mixing clays, silt and sand with strong limestone components and gray-blue coloration formed 7-11 million years ago. The estate's other Verduno sites—Neirane, Rocche dell'Olmo, and Boscatto—rest on the younger Cassano Spinola formation with less limestone and different fossil content, while their Castelletto vineyard in Monforte sits on the Lequio formation's alternating clayey marls and sandy soils. Fabio maintains ultra-traditional methods including gentle foot-crushing of grapes, extraordinary 60-day skin macerations, and aging in large Slavonian oak botti, creating wines of powerful structure yet ethereal delicacy. The estate produces five distinct Barolos (Monvigliero, Cannubi, Castelletto, Acclivi, and a Barolo normale) plus exceptional examples of indigenous varieties like Verduno Pelaverga and Freisa.
