Paolo Scavino is a renowned winemaker from the Barolo region of Piedmont, Italy, where his family has been making wine since the early 1900s. He took over the estate from his father Enrico in the 1980s and is known for his meticulous vineyard management and traditional winemaking approach, producing highly acclaimed Barolo wines from top crus such as Cannubi, Bric dël Fiasc, and Rocche dell'Annunziata, as well as other varieties like Barbera, Dolcetto, and Langhe Nebbiolo. Scavino's wines, particularly the Bric dël Fiasc Barolo, are sought after by collectors for their complexity, elegance, and ageability, and in recent years, his daughters Enrica and Elisa have become more involved in managing the estate alongside their father.

James Suckling: 96 Points

Floral and fresh with lots of roses and spices with hints of ripe fruit. Love the nose! Full and chewy with polished tannins and a balanced finish. Caressing and beautiful on the palate. Better in 2015.

Wine Advocate: 94 Points

The 2008 Barolo Monvigliero flows from the glass with layers of silky, textured fruit. This is one of the more feminine wines in the Scavino lineup. Floral, minty notes develop in the glass, adding complexity, nuance and personality. The expression of fruit is very Scavino, while the aromatics and structure are pure Monvigliero. This is another intriguing Barolo from Scavino. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. There is always something new happening at Scavino, where Enrico Scavino, along with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, continues to push the envelope. This year the Scavinos have a new Riserva they are issuing to mark the 30th Anniversary of Bric del Fiasc, first released in 1978. The 2009s, 2010s and 2011s I tasted point to an estate working at a very high level of overall quality and consistency. Readers who want to learn more about the estate may want to take a look at my video interview with Elisa Scavino.  Antonio Galloni

Served to me from under the table – hors concours, so to speak. Spicier and denser than Cannubi. Very closed and compact palate, really reluctant, but fragrant fruit on the finish. Big wave of tannin but not rough. Lay down. (WS)
