A vague suggestion of exotic fruit can be found on the pretty floral and white orchard fruit-scented nose. The succulent, round and rich middleweight flavors possess both good energy and detail while displaying solid length on the bone-dry, youthfully austere and bitter lemon-inflected finale. This is a bit rustic but certainly delicious and refreshing. From vines situated exclusively on the slopes in Charmes aux Prêtes and Les Vaudenelles
Producer note: Bruno Clair's sons, Edouard and Arthur, have largely taken over the day-to-day responsibilities of running the domaine yet this did not deter him from meeting me for our annual tasting assisted by Arthur. With respect to the 2022 vintage, they noted that "it was an up and down growing season and what happened in one commune didn't necessarily happen in another. For example, Gevrey got both drenched and hailed on while Marsannay, which obviously isn't far away, had neither. We began picking on the 28th of August and the fruit basically could not have been cleaner with good ripeness levels, thick skins and reasonable yields that were about the same as realized in 2019, which was not abundant. Potential alcohols were perfectly good but not high as they ranged from 12.2 to 13.5%. While it varied from wine to wine, on average we used roughly 50% whole clusters though a few wines saw 100%. The vinification were neither light nor heavy handed as we didn't want to extract too much tannin, which could have easily happened given the thickness of the skins. As to the wines, perhaps their best attribute is the perfect balance as they have everything they need in adequate amounts yet nothing to excess."
