When the Leonardini family purchased Whitehall Lane in 1993, they overhauled the barrel-aging program and brought a scientific approach to vineyards the original founders had planted specifically for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1979. The estate sits in Rutherford, where gravelly loam valley-floor soils define the terroir, and the winery operates under Napa Green certified sustainable practices. The 2019 is an 87% Merlot blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petit Verdot; whole-berry fermentation and 20 months in 35% new French oak build the structure. Red currant, cocoa, and red plum lead, with fine-grained tannins and a supple, medium-to-full-bodied finish.
