Sebastian Fürst now leads this Bürgstadt estate in Churfranken, where Riesling has grown on the Centgrafenberg's terraced parcels since the era of the Archbishops of Mainz. The VDP Grosses Gewächs comes from iron-rich red Buntsandstein, giving the wine more affinity with the primary rock soils of the western Rheingau and Nahe than with Franken's typical Muschelkalk Rieslings. The estate farms organically with biodynamic practices. Whole bunches are foot-crushed, spontaneously fermented, and aged in a single 2,400-liter Doppelstück cask. Moderate at 11–12.5% ABV, the wine shows white peach, citrus zest, grapefruit, salty stone, smoke, and bone-dry tension built for long aging.
Jancis Robinson 17.5/20: RS 2.1 g/l, TA 7.9 g/l.
"The shortest distance between two points is a straight line and it doesn't get any straighter than this. No detour, no distraction – linear, lime-laced perfection. The sublime and savoury core is covered in whisper-thin layers of grapefruit, lime, chamomile and peach. Control is relinquished, just for a minute, to allow in the wild, herbal lift of mint and sage. Just the right amount of power and momentum. Chalky grip and refined, grapefruit finish." (PS)
