When the 1968 Belice Valley earthquake destroyed the Guarrasi family's estate in northwest Sicily, French count Hugues Bernard de la Gatinais rebuilt it from the ground up and introduced a French-trained rigor to Sicilian winemaking that the island hadn't seen before. Campo Reale draws Nero d'Avola from selected parcels at roughly 1,300 feet above sea level in Camporeale, on clay soils trained to Guyot with yields kept deliberately low. The must undergoes long skin maceration at controlled temperatures, then most of the wine ages in stainless steel with a portion in oak barrels, preserving the grape's native structure. The result is deep ruby with dried black cherry, ripe plum, and baking spice, backed by firm but manageable tannins and a clean finish.
