Most Japanese single malts lean into light, delicate fruit — Hakushu 18 goes in the opposite direction, adding deliberate smoke to its mountain-forest character without surrendering refinement. Suntory's Hakushu Distillery sits at roughly 700 meters elevation in Japan's Southern Alps, where cool temperatures, high humidity, and pure snowmelt water slow fermentation and maturation considerably. Traditional wooden washbacks are used during fermentation, and the whisky is aged 18 years across a range of cask types. The result: ripe pear, dried mint, and jasmine up front, with mango and menthol on the palate and a long, lightly smoked finish.
