Opus One's 2022 vintage began with 12 inches above-average winter rain followed by unseasonably dry late winter and turbulent late spring that didn't affect flowering or fruit set. Extreme harvest heat required pre-emptive measures—harvesting ripe fruit quickly and selective irrigation based on vine needs—from August 24-September 26, producing exceptional freshness and flavor concentration. This 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 0.5% Malbec blend underwent 20-day skin contact and 18 months in new French oak. Blueberry, cassis, dried rose petals, olive, and graphite aromatics lead to bright red fruit, cocoa, and orange peel on the palate, finishing with wet stone, vanilla, coffee, and fine-grained tannins signaling long cellar potential.
