Opici Wines & Spirits is a fourth-generation, New Jersey-based producer and importer with roots in the wine business going back to 1913, when Italian immigrants Joseph and Esther Opici first brought Italian wine to the East Coast. Their California Marsala is produced from Catarratto, Grillo, and Inzolia — the same trio of indigenous white grapes used in traditional Sicilian Marsala. Fermented and fortified with grape spirit in the California style, the wine gets its amber color from blending older reserves with younger lots rather than added caramel coloring. Rich and off-dry, it delivers baked fruit, dried apricot, and a nutty, lightly oxidative finish.
