Founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño, Bodegas Muga in Rioja Alta has become synonymous with tradition and artisanal skill over three generations. Uniquely, it is Spain s only winery using oak throughout its entire process, importing American and French oak for its in-house cooperage that produces about 2,000 barrels annually. Their meticulous techniques—gravity racking, candle-guided sediment detection, and egg white fining—impart a distinctive velvety texture to their reds. Nestled in the Montes Obarenes foothills, Muga owns 620 acres of Garnacha, Tempranillo, Viura, and Malvasia vineyards and controls an additional 370 acres from local growers. The wine exhibits an attractive, deep, cherry colour. The nose is fresh and complex expressing aromas of blackberry forest fruit and prunes, while notes of cocoa, vanilla and subtle toast also come through denoting an ageing in top quality oak. Fresh on the palate with very well-integrated acidity. A lovely, pleasant mouth-feel with a good lingering finish. Clean and fresh with great ageing potential.
