When Helsinki hosted the 1952 Summer Olympics, Finland's bar infrastructure couldn't handle cocktail service at scale — so the government commissioned Hartwall to create a pre-mixed gin-and-grapefruit soda that bartenders could serve fast. That drink, lonkero, never left. Three Finnish entrepreneurs and an American co-founder brought their version to the U.S. in 2018, built on gin with natural citrus soda at 5.5% ABV. It pours with bright grapefruit on the nose and a tart, lightly sweet palate, juniper rounding the mid-palate, and a clean, effervescent finish with no bitter edge.
