The Gaja family has produced Barbaresco since 1859 from 14 vineyards totaling 21.4 hectares between 250-330 meters elevation in Barbaresco municipality, with 40-year-old average vine age farmed sustainably. The 2021 vintage brought severe winter snow and rain, dry spring, then early April frost affecting lower Barbaresco vineyards with 5% losses, followed by hot violent summer with frequent thunderstorms and July powdery mildew threat before redeeming late-August rainfall. Each single-vineyard parcel of 100% Nebbiolo ferments, macerates, and ages separately in oak for 12 months before blending and additional 12-month oak aging at 14% alcohol, showing citrus, red flowers, cherry, strawberry, and licorice with juicy texture and floral elegance.
