The Fontbonne family distilled herbal liqueurs in France's Savoie region beginning in the 1850s, with founder Jean Fontbonne creating his final formulation—Fontbonne Verte—as a 26-ingredient blend before the company sold in 1904. Savoie's alpine meadows and proximity to the French Alps provide access to mountain herbs, flowers, and botanicals that thrive in high-elevation limestone soils and cool temperatures. This 90-proof herbal liqueur has been recreated from Jean Fontbonne's original recipe, which his son René Louis preserved, combining alpine botanicals typical of French chartreuse-style liqueurs including génépi, angelica, and melissa to deliver the "dancing" palate sensation Fontbonne intended—herbaceous, floral, and subtly sweet with lingering botanical complexity.
