In 1958, Dr. Konstantin Frank planted the first Vitis vinifera vines on the southwestern slopes of Keuka Lake, proving cold-climate viticulture was possible and sparking the Vinifera Revolution that reshaped American winemaking. Now in its fourth generation, the family-owned estate is New York Sustainable Winegrowing certified. Their Grüner Veltliner grows on the Seneca Lake estate in Hector, in the Finger Lakes' warmest mesoclimate—known as the "Banana Belt"—planted by Fred Frank in 2007 after his studies at Germany's Geisenheim Institute, on deep Honeoye silt loam soils. Unoaked and crisp, it delivers ripe pear, apricot, and stone fruit, with the variety's signature white pepper lift on the finish.
