Description of Product
Domaine Michel Lafarge, led by Frédéric Lafarge and now joined by his daughter Clothilde, produces consistently exceptional wines in the Côte de Beaune. One of Burgundy's pioneering biodynamic estates (Demeter certified since 2000), their meticulous approach includes labor-intensive traditional methods like hand destemming and muscle-powered basket pressing. This dedication to ancestral techniques yields wines with remarkable clarity, acidity, and minerality. Their modest ten-hectare holding in Volnay allows them the flexibility to harvest at perfect ripeness, especially crucial during increasingly unpredictable weather patterns that challenge Burgundy's vineyards.
The Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées comes from 50-year-old Pinot Noir vines planted in southeast-facing parcels bordering premier crus, including Mitans. This clay-limestone terroir produces a wine with noticeably more depth and silkiness than their regular Volnay. The 2022 vintage—which Frédéric compares to the legendary 1964 or 1966—underwent indigenous yeast fermentation for two weeks before 18 months aging in barrel (7% new oak). The result delivers vibrant juicy red fruits with remarkable freshness and a concentrated dark core of fine, melting tannins. This exceptionally balanced wine expresses both power and terroir authenticity, promising excellent drinking both young and with age.
