Founded in 1882 by a San Francisco entrepreneur near Calistoga, Château Montelena ceased winemaking during Prohibition until Jim Barrett purchased the estate in 1968, replanting vineyards and modernizing facilities to produce Bordeaux First Growth-level wines. In 1976, Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay won the Paris Tasting, placing California at the forefront of the wine world—an event memorialized in "The Judgment of Paris" and the film Bottle Shock. Master winemaker Bo Barrett now leads the estate alongside Matt Crafton and Dave Vella, farming Napa Valley's complex soils and slopes. This 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon delivers blackberry, cassis, clove, tobacco, supple tannins, minerality, and a finish of strawberry jam, cola, graphite, and black cherry.
