Chartreuse Gentiane revives an ancestral recipe first bottled in 1998 by Carthusian Monks in the French Alps, the same order producing Chartreuse since 1737, drawing on centuries of botanical expertise cultivated in high-altitude Alpine conditions where gentian roots and mountain herbs develop concentrated bitter compounds. The monks ferment selected roots and rootstalk using traditional methods, then macerate undisclosed spices and botanicals with beetroot-based alcohol at 22.7% ABV, maintaining the secrecy that defines all Chartreuse production with only a few monks knowing the complete formula. The liqueur presents balanced bitterness and earthy complexity with gentian's characteristic quinine-like bite, herbal notes reminiscent of Alpine meadows, subtle sweetness, ideal for aperitif service, spritzes, or as a gentian substitute in White Negronis.
