A wine that spent close to eight years in cask — not by design, but because proprietor Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa fell ill and certain lots sat undisturbed in the cellar — makes this 2016 Santacroce one of the more unusual releases in recent Tuscany. The blend splits evenly between Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on the estate's clay and limestone soils in Castelnuovo Berardenga in the Chianti Classico zone. Despite the extended aging, it remains remarkably fresh, with dark red fruit, rose petal, spice, and menthol, finishing with surprising lift.
