A letter from a dying patriarch — detailing his vision for the family's first serious wine — burned in a manor house fire, but not before giving the brand its name: Carta Vieja. The del Pedregal family has been farming the Loncomilla subzone of Chile's Maule Valley since 1825, with the seventh and eighth generations now running the estate. Vineyards sit at roughly 2,000 feet, where alluvial clay-loam soils and a sharp diurnal swing between hot days and cold nights pace ripening evenly. The Merlot delivers ripe plum, black cherry, and a soft, smooth finish.
