Islay's peat bogs — dense, Atlantic-soaked, and unlike anything on the Scottish mainland — are the reason Ardbeg's heavily peated malt reaches the phenolic intensity it does. The distillery sits on the island's southern shore, running spirit through traditional pot stills, then maturing it in ex-bourbon oak for 25 years. Smoked cream and earthy bonfire open the nose alongside pine and candle wax; hot pepper and lemon sherbet collide on the palate, with tar and carbolic soap threading through to a long finish of aniseed, fudge, and lingering cream.
