Justin Willett holds a monopole on Block 1 of China Blue Vineyard in Happy Canyon AVA, Santa Barbara County's easternmost appellation. Planted in 2014 on clay loam studded with red chert and serpentine cobbles, the nutrient-poor soils naturally limit vine vigor and concentrate the fruit. Native yeast fermentation in open-top oak fermenters with two weeks on skins and gentle pumpovers is followed by 20 months in 33% new French oak. The practicing-organic 2021 is bottled unfined and unfiltered at 148 cases, delivering dense black fruit, firm tannins, and a minerally, chert-driven finish.
