From the steep, terraced slopes of Lombardy's Valtellina Superiore appellation comes Nino Negri's Sassorosso Grumello, a profound expression of alpine Nebbiolo (locally known as Chiavennasca) grown in an extraordinary microclimate. Perched between 900-1600 feet above sea level on a rocky prominence detached from the mountainside by ancient glacial erosion, the vines struggle through shallow, sandy loam soil contained by traditional dry-stone walls, forcing their roots deep into the parent rock. This struggle produces a wine of remarkable elegance and purity, offering complex aromas of blackberry, currant, cherry and raspberry, complemented by floral notes of violet and rose. On the palate, its dense yet silky tannins provide structure to the flavorsome beginning and long-lasting finish, demonstrating both the austerity and aging potential characteristic of this unique alpine terroir.
