Royal Tokaji, established in 1990, is a winery located in the village of Mád in the Tokaj wine region of Hungary, known for producing exceptional white wines using traditional methods dating back to the 17th century. The winery owns a combination of first and second-growth vineyards, including the renowned Mézes Mály, and primarily uses three grape varieties: Furmint, Hárslevelü, and Muscat de Lunel. Royal Tokaji's state-of-the-art winery, designed by Csaba Bodonyi, accommodates over 1,000 oak barrels for aging and has a stainless-steel tank capacity of 71,325 gallons. The winery produces several styles of wine, including dry, off-dry, and the iconic Tokaji Aszú, which is made by adding aszú berries affected by noble rot to a base wine, resulting in a sweet, rich, and complex wine that is aged for a minimum of three years before release.
The 2017 Royal Tokaji Red Label 5 puttonyos is an exceptional sweet wine, showcasing the ideal conditions of the Tokaj region. The hot summer and perfect autumn weather allowed for the meticulous selection of intensely flavored aszú berries from Royal Tokaji's classed vineyards. The hand-harvested aszú berries, with excellent structure and perfect botrytis, were macerated in fermenting must and aged for over two years in Hungarian oak barrels. The resulting wine displays an intense nose with fruitiness and spice, a harmonious balance of richness and crisp acidity on the palate, and flavors of white peach and ripe plums. The 2017 Red Label 5 puttonyos showcases great structure, depth, and freshness, with excellent complexity and long aging potential, making it a testament to the skill and dedication of the Royal Tokaji team in preserving the legacy of the Tokaj region.
A waft of beeswax on the nose transitions on the palate to a pure and lovely beam of poached apricot fruit, accented by dried raspberry, candied ginger, hazelnut biscotti and honeysuckle notes. Fine and creamy on the palate, with a long, lightly mouthwatering finish.
Dark amber in the glass, this Tokaj Aszú has aromas of honeycomb, jasmine and freesia. In the mouth are intense flavors of ripe yellow peach and dried apricot.
