Royal Tokaji, established in 1990, is a winery located in the village of Mád in the Tokaj wine region of Hungary, known for producing exceptional white wines using traditional methods dating back to the 17th century. The winery owns a combination of first and second-growth vineyards, including the renowned Mézes Mály, and primarily uses three grape varieties: Furmint, Hárslevelü, and Muscat de Lunel. Royal Tokaji's state-of-the-art winery, designed by Csaba Bodonyi, accommodates over 1,000 oak barrels for aging and has a stainless-steel tank capacity of 71,325 gallons. The winery produces several styles of wine, including dry, off-dry, and the iconic Tokaji Aszú, which is made by adding aszú berries affected by noble rot to a base wine, resulting in a sweet, rich, and complex wine that is aged for a minimum of three years before release.
The 2021 Royal Tokaji Úrágya Furmint is a stunning dry white wine that showcases the unique character of the "God's bed" vineyard, nestled between two extinct volcanoes near the village of Mád. The vineyard's volcanic soils impart structure, backbone, and mineral tones to the wine, while the oak barrel maturation adds complexity and roundness. The 2021 vintage experienced a challenging weather pattern, with a hot summer followed by an unusually cold period in late August and early September. This delayed ripening and maintained high acidity levels, resulting in a bold and well-balanced wine. The Furmint grapes were harvested, and whole bunches were pressed and fermented in 500-liter Zemplén oak barrels. The wine was then aged for 10 months in oak, with 20% new barrels. The Úrágya Furmint is an excellent companion to barbecued white meats and even more substantial veal and pork dishes, thanks to its robust structure and mineral richness.
