Paolo Scavino is a renowned winemaker from the Barolo region of Piedmont, Italy, where his family has been making wine since the early 1900s. He took over the estate from his father Enrico in the 1980s and is known for his meticulous vineyard management and traditional winemaking approach, producing highly acclaimed Barolo wines from top crus such as Cannubi, Bric dël Fiasc, and Rocche dell'Annunziata, as well as other varieties like Barbera, Dolcetto, and Langhe Nebbiolo. Scavino's wines, particularly the Bric dël Fiasc Barolo, are sought after by collectors for their complexity, elegance, and ageability, and in recent years, his daughters Enrica and Elisa have become more involved in managing the estate alongside their father.

The 2000 Barolo Bric del Fiasc (magnum) explodes onto the palate with layers of raspberry jam, new leather, licorice and spices, showing tons of intensity, expressive inner sweetness and an impossibly long, powerful finish. Bric del Fiasc is usually a massively tannic wine, but in 2000 the fruit has enough intensity to nearly cover the tannins. This is superb, great Bric del Fiasc. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. Enrico Scavino’s 2000s must be considered among the successes of the vintage. At the time, the wines were made with short fermentations lasting just four days, if not a little less. Stylistically the wines are among Scavino’s most modern Baroli. The 2000s won’t appeal to all readers, but there is little question the wines have aged exquisitely. I tasted all of the wines from magnum, but lest readers think that was an overwhelming factor in how these wines showed, the most backward wine was the Cannubi, and it was the only wine I tasted from bottle!  Antonio Galloni

Very impressive nose on this. Bright, fresh and ripe fruit jump out of the glass. Think blueberries and mulberries. A pensive wine with a full body layered with beautiful fruit. This is deep and fascinating.

Mid ruby. Meaty nose with great life. Sweet, round palate. There is probably just as much tannin in this wine as the Carobric but the fruit is much more intense so disguises it. Some real richness – perhaps too sweet to be regarded as classic.
