This 2022 Montagny showcases the welcome return to serenity in Burgundy, emerging from a vintage marked by above-average temperatures and exceptional sunshine - equivalent to an extra month of July. Sourced from the southern reaches of the Côte Chalonnaise at elevations of 290-370m, this Chardonnay blends fruit from several notable plots including Bonneveaux, Garchère, Vigne Couland, Sur le Cloux, and Champ Toizeaux. The 50-year-old vines, rooted in calcareous clay and marl soils, produce fruit that is hand-harvested and thoughtfully vinified: whole-cluster pressed, followed by both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in oak, then aged for 12 months (80% in oak barrels with 12% new oak, 20% in stainless steel). The resulting wine offers delicate aromas of acacia honey, leading to a round mid-palate that finishes with engaging tension and a distinctive saline note. This refined expression pairs beautifully with regional specialties like pike terrine, crayfish gratin, or classic frog legs with parsley.
Subtle but still perceptible wood sets off the ultra-fresh and expressive aromas of Granny Smith apples, zest and a floral top note. The rich, delicious and equally vibrant medium weight flavors flash an appealing bead of minerality on the balanced and nicely crisp finale that is shaped by bright but not drying acidity. Solid quality here.
