Like cracking open an ashen stone, flinty and viral, with nuances of musty red currant and hints of animal musk, the 2019 Rosso di Montalcino makes itself known. This is elegance to the extreme, with ripe red berries and mineral underpinnings accelerated by zesty acids and savory spices that tease the senses. It's wildly fresh and long, staining the palate in youthful concentration, yet maintaining a pretty and refined personality. The 2019 is a knockout Rosso from Le Ragnaie. Eric Guido
Aged in large oak casks for two years, the Le Ragnaie 2019 Rosso di Montalcino hits the market a bit later than its peers, allowing for some faint, age-related complexity to form on the bouquet. This pretty wine delivers dark cherry, plum, spice, smoke and dark cola. There is a savory side also with earthy mineral tones and rusty metal. The bouquet is tart and bright, and the mouthfeel is fresh, simple and linear. Production is 27,000 bottles. Monica Larner
