Le Ragnaie, a pioneering winery in Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy, is led by the dynamic winemaker Riccardo Campinoti, who brings a fresh perspective to traditional Tuscan winemaking. With a passion for the region's history and culture, Riccardo employs organic viticulture practices to craft wines that authentically reflect the region. The estate's high-altitude vineyards, including those in Petroso and Castelnuovo dell'Abate, offer a unique combination of freshness, vibrancy, and coolness.
The 2019 Brunello from Le Ragnaie is a captivating red wine that showcases the region's signature flavors. With a rich, mineral-toned taste, this wine offers macerated cherry, berry, savory wild herb, and tobacco notes. Its fluid texture is supported by a solid backbone of tannins and acidity, creating a beautifully balanced and aromatic experience. This high-elevation Brunello is a true gem, perfect for those seeking a traditional Tuscan wine with a modern twist.
A beautiful cologne lifts from the glass of the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino, which pours a red/orange-tinged color. Aromas of wild cherries, truffles, bittersweet chocolate, and dried orange peel are followed by a medium to full-bodied red with fine, coiled tannins, a linear feel, and refreshing lift all the way through the finish. I love the tertiary notes that come through, and this wine will only improve and gain in complexity over time. Drink 2025-2040.
Le Ragnaie is perched at a high elevation just south of the hill of Montalcino. Led by the estate owners, Riccardo and Jennifer Campinoti, this estate is producing some of the most compelling single-vineyard expressions of Brunello to date, with clarity, focus, and distinction between each of their crus. Elevage takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels. Additionally, for those looking to travel to the region, they have an agritourismo at the winery, which is a short drive from the town of Montalcino.
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows delicate aromas of blue flower, redcurrant, cranberry and potting soils. It has all the basic components of a classic Sangiovese. Fruit is sourced from across the estate vineyard holdings ranging from 200 to 600 meters above sea level, or the ceiling of the appellation. Baking spice is delivered to the palate with silky, almost glossy tannins. The mouthfeel is extremely fine. This is a very Burgundian Brunello, with 38,500 bottles made. (M. Lerner)
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens slowly in the glass, dusty and floral, with depths of dark red fruit and exotic spice. This is silky smooth with medium-bodied textures and vibrant acidity that propels its tart wild berry fruits and mineral tones as rosy inner florals race across the palate. It tapers off with admirable length and concentration. Crunchy tannins frame the experience without slowing its momentum. The 2019 is a gorgeous blend of vintage and house style. Don't miss it.
The 2019s at Le Ragnaie are loaded with complexity and full of energy. I remember meeting Riccardo Campinoti and pouring his newly released and only wine: the 2004. At that time, it was a complete outlier from everything else made in Montalcino. Today, Le Ragnaie boasts a total of five Brunellos, four of which are single vineyard wines, distinguishing the estate in a crowd of the best producers in the region. Campinoti’s Brunello Passo del Lume Spento continues to be a big standout. While not the highest-scoring wine in the portfolio, its high-elevation fruit (the highest in the region until the Gaja family started planting their new vineyards just up the hill) creates a wine of stimulating presence. It’s a Brunello full of tension and energy. I was utterly enamored by the Casanovina Montosoli, a perfect example of how locations in the north really shined in 2019. The best part is that the Brunello di Montalcino Annata remains a serious effort, as does the Rosso di Montalcino.
Just mid ruby. A lively concentrated nose of perfumed red fruit. A real step up from the rosso, more complex and with great depth, while maintaining its elegance. Sappy, almost racy and pure on the finish with fine tannins lining the fruit. (WS)
