Château Fuissé, a cornerstone of Burgundian winemaking since 1604, demonstrates the Vincent family's five-generation commitment to excellence in Pouilly-Fuissé. The estate's crown jewel, Le Clos vineyard, sits behind the historic château on dense clay-limestone soils with optimal south/southeast exposure. [Similar to the prestigious terroirs of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet], this walled parcel's exceptional quality has positioned it for potential premier cru classification - a historic first for the Mâconnais region. Under Antoine Vincent's leadership, the estate practices sustainable viticulture, nurturing 45+ year-old Chardonnay vines that benefit from the unique microclimate and mineral-rich soils.
The 2022 Le Clos showcases meticulous barrel fermentation and 12-month aging in 80% new oak, producing an extraordinarily complex white Burgundy. The palate unfolds with waves of [golden] apple, [Williams] pear, and [baking] spices, while [crushed chalk and citrus blossom] notes emerge on the persistent finish. A firm, mineral-driven acidity provides exceptional structure, suggesting [15+ years] of aging potential. Limited production of under 500 cases annually makes this a coveted collector's item among fine wine enthusiasts.
The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Le Clos 1er Cru comes from vines with an east exposure on the middle of the slope, a monopole of Château de Fuissé, although each part is vinified separately. It is raised entirely in new oak from a local cooperage in Romaneche-Thorin, although that is far less marked than the vintages that I used to taste 15 to 20 years ago. The palate is nicely balanced and elegant in style. Crucially, as I mentioned already, the new oak is far less obvious, allowing the terroir to come through. Grilled almonds and walnuts appear towards the finish. Sophisticated.
This also exhibits generous wood and a more subtle touch of vanilla on the very ripe but not really exotic menthol and citrus-suffused aromas that are similar if a bit more floral in character. The finer if less powerful middle weight flavors exude fine minerality on the compact and impressively long if noticeably warm finale. This lovely effort does need to develop better depth and it's presently a bit woody but the potential is clearly present.
