Domaine Camus-Bruchon is a family-owned winery located in Savigny-les-Beaune, a village in Burgundy known for its excellent Pinot Noirs. The winery is particularly skilled at cultivating old vines, and many of their wines are crafted from vines planted just before and after World War I. Guillaume Camus, the current owner, is considered one of the most talented winemakers in the region.
Savigny-les-Beaune Les Pimentiers Vieilles Vignes is a Pinot Noir made from grapes grown in the “Les Pimentiers” vineyard, planted in 1929. The soil in this vineyard is clay-limestone with some rocks on top of sand, which contributes to the mineral tones of the wine. The grapes are destemmed, undergo a cold maceration, and then ferment for 15-20 days. The wine is aged for 12-15 months in 30% new French oak barrels. This results in a darker and more concentrated wine than other wines from this producer, with deep dark cherry and earthy flavors. Despite its richness, the wine maintains a refreshing finish.
Guillaume Camus runs this 9.5 ha domaine located on the outskirts of Savigny. He described the 2021 vintage as "one that was basically challenging from start to finish. Early April hit the vines with frost, then the flowering did not pass especially well as there was quite a bit of shatter and then there was a series of cryptogamic diseases that pardoned no laxity in terms of treatments. We managed to avoid the worst of it as we began a program of leaf pulling before the mildew could really get a foothold. This wasn't easy though because the Acariens (small spider-like mites) bit us to death; seriously, they were awful! We finally began picking on the 23rd of September and while there was some sorting, it was not really anything out of the ordinary. Despite all of the problems, we actually had very good maturities as the potential alcohols came in between 12.5 and 13.7% so there was almost no chaptalization. Yields though were another story as overall, we were down fully 60%. I did a soft but long vinification of around four weeks using 20 to 30% whole clusters, the idea being to try to extract only the best of what the fruit had to offer while avoiding astringency. As to the wines, they're classically styled wines with good but not high acidities and overall, I very much like them. Each terroir is clearly identified and they should be approachable young but have no difficulty aging well over the mid-term." As the comments confirm, I was impressed by what I found here. I agree with Camus' take that his wines should drink well young but have no trouble rewarding mid-term keeping. Camus noted that the 2021 reds were bottled in December 2022. He also noted that there would be no white due to the frost.
As it usually is, the nose is quite spicy with a deft application of wood framing notes of plum, black cherry, violet and a whiff of the sauvage. There is again excellent volume to the quite finely textured middleweight flavors that possess slightly better depth on the cool and impressively long finale. This is a first-rate Savigny villages and worth your interest.
The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Pimentiers is more successful on the nose compared to the Cuvée Reine Joly, taut and focused with better stem integration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fine acidity. The 30% whole bunches are nicely integrated and letting the terroir speak on the tea leaf-infused finish. Fine.
