Brunello di Montalcino, a renowned Italian wine, owes its existence to Ferruccio Biondi-Santi and his family, who have been producing wines at the Tenuta Greppo estate for seven generations. Located in Montalcino, the estate spans 25 hectares of vineyards on soil rich in heavy stones and marl, ideal for cultivating Sangiovese Grosso. The Biondi-Santi family has maintained traditional viticultural methods for over a century, focusing on producing wines known for their elegance and exceptional longevity. Their innovative practices, including the development of the BBS 11 Sangiovese clone and the creation of a 100% Sangiovese wine, have significantly contributed to the establishment and prestige of Brunello di Montalcino. The family's commitment to quality and ageability has earned them numerous accolades and played a crucial role in shaping the wine's regulations and its elevation to DOCG status.
The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino DOC from Biondi-Santi is a vibrant and youthful expression of their high-altitude vineyards. Made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso (BBS11 clone) grown on the estate, this wine reflects the unique terroir and traditional winemaking methods of the region. The 2020 vintage experienced a mild winter and cool spring, followed by a warm and dry summer with beneficial temperature variations. The wine undergoes traditional vinification and 12 months of aging in Slavonian oak. At 13.5% alcohol, it offers a lively profile with notes of red berries, plums, violets, and Mediterranean herbs, complemented by bright acidity and fine-grained tannins. This vintage showcases the elegant and charming characteristics typical of Biondi-Santi's Rosso di Montalcino, making it enjoyable in its youth while maintaining the potential for aging.
Released in June 2023, the medium red 2020 Rosso Di Montalcino is open aromatically already at this stage, revealing notes of ripe red cherries along with a very pretty floral perfume of fresh flowers and wild fresh herbs. Medium-bodied and rounded, with a very elegant feel, sweet, fine tannins, and a pleasing fresh ripeness, it’s a lovely wine with a lot of charm now. It has very clean fruit aromas and profile, with an open feel and a lovely sanguine mineral tone of the finish. This is going to be a Rosso with a wide window of drinking over the coming 8-10 years
Generous aromas of ripe strawberries and cherries, turning to flowers and stones with some crushed cement. Medium body with firm tannins that fill the mouth, as well as lively acidity and depth of fruit. Savory and almost salty at the end. Drink or hold.
The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is simply stunning, lifting from the glass with vivid raspberry and cherry notes complemented by sweet rose, clove and cedar. This model of purity is silky and refined, with a dusty feel to its ripe red berry fruits. Orange notes adds contrast toward the close. It finishes structured and long, still remarkably pure, with a slightly bitter tinge that slowly fades. This fabulous Rosso from Biondi-Santi shows the work done over the past years.
Pale ruby. Lightly dusty nose. Real spread of textured, sweet fruit all the way over the palate with real drive and grip on the finish. Admirably long. Really very exciting! Pure, fully ripe Sangiovese – sorry, Brunello. Vigorous and a great balance between fruit and the natural tannin and acidity of the grape. Just glorious! Already a great drink but with enough ripe tannin to go on and on. A tip: do not drink this at the same time as Biondi-Santi’s Brunellos, however.
