Bergström Winery is a family-owned operation in Oregon's Willamette Valley, a region renowned for its cool climate and exceptional Pinot Noir. Committed to biodynamic practices, they meticulously farm their estate vineyards across three prestigious AVAs. Their motto: 1000 days of effort goes into every bottle, reflecting their dedication to quality and natural methods.
The 2017 Silice Pinot Noir comes from Bergström's sun-drenched vineyard with deep sandy soils, remnants of an ancient beach. Whole cluster fermentation coaxes enticing aromas of gingerbread, cola, and sassafras, layered with savory notes and a hint of floral perfume. On the palate, expect a captivating interplay of ripe fruit, round tannins, and bright acidity, culminating in a juicy, lingering finish. This Pinot Noir is approachable now, but promises to develop further in the cellar.
This has an exotic edge with candied red cherries and raspberries, swathed in flowers and spice. The palate has a smoothly succulent edge that carries plenty of depth into the finish. Nicely weighted. Drink or hold.
Medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Silice Vineyard opens with fresh tangerine peel, baked cranberries, dried bark and rose petals scents with notions of licorice, cured meats, pepper and spiced blackberries. The palate is medium-bodied and über spicy, with lovely orange and potpourri nuances. It has a firm, lightly chalky frame and great freshness on the finish. This merits another year in bottle. Vivid ruby-red. Spice- and mineral-accented red berry, cherry and floral pastille scents show sharp definition and pick up suggestions of licorice and exotic spices with air. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering gently chewy raspberry, red currant and cherry flavors that deliver appealing spiciness and firm back-end cut. Concentrated yet lithe in style, finishing with powerful thrust and slowly building tannins.
Tasting through Josh Bergstrom’s wines from recent vintages, like these ‘17s, it’s hard to imagine that a little over a decade ago he was making full-throttle, sometimes lavishly oaked and often flamboyant Pinots. That decidedly not the case these days, as Bergstrom has backed way off on new barrels and, in fact, is making wines that are distinctly fine-grained and graceful, with minimal lumber intrusion, even at such an early stage.
