Description

Jean-Baptiste Souillard is a winemaker from the Northern Rhone region in France, known for his meticulous approach to viticulture and vinification. His Roussanne vineyard, located in the southern part of the Ardèche, is planted on a steep east-facing slope with granite and sandstone soils at an elevation of 380-450 meters. Souillard practices lutte raisonnée, a sustainable approach to viticulture that minimizes chemical use. From a tiny 0.27 acre parcel planted in the late 1930s, this Marsanne comes from a gently sloping, south-facing vineyard in the northern reaches of Crozes-Hermitage. The deep, silty soils over limestone bedrock give rise to a wine with excellent concentration and stony minerality. Surrounded by apricot orchards, hints of that delicate stone fruit often grace the nose and palate. On the richer side for Marsanne, this cuvée benefits from 12 months aging in neutral oak, adding texture and complexity. The pure, unadulterated expression of terroir shines through, with lively acidity framing the ripe orchard fruit flavors and saline mineral tones. A lovely balance of power and delicacy, this vin de garde should offer considerable longevity in the cellar.
