After World War II, the Nervi family owned vineyards in Gattinara, producing wine. Elsa Nervi's marriage to Attilio Delsignore combined their properties, resulting in five hectares of vineyards. Attilio, aiming to create a vintage wine, bottled under his own name in 1960, creating "Nervi-Delsignore" Spanna. He joined the Gattinara Vineyard Co-operative to protect the D.O.C. and won a Gold Medal in 1973 for his 1967 Gattinara D.O.C. Despite health issues forcing him to stop wine production, Attilio continued growing grapes. Today, Cantina Delsignore carries on his legacy with the same dedication and tenacity.
Il Putto is a wine from Gattinara with a garnet red color that develops brick hues. It offers a refined bouquet of small red fruits, spices, and natural violet scents. On the palate, it's dry and full-bodied with balanced tannins and a characteristic bitter finish, exhibiting excellent structure and length. The name "Il Putto" is inspired by a decorative tile on Gattinara's 15th-century cathedral, which illustrates the historical significance of grape cultivation in the region.
The 2018 Gattinara Il Putto is a powerful, brooding wine. Ample and broad on the palate, the 2018 offers a compelling interplay of intensity and old-school structure. It is a super-appealing combination, to say the least. Wild dark cherry, spice, leather, tobacco, menthol, incense and licorice all build with a bit of coaxing. This is a seriously beautiful and complex Gattinara.
