Sanford Winery is a historic producer in California's Sta. Rita Hills AVA, a cool-climate region known for its Pinot Noir. Founded in 1971 by Michael Benedict and Richard Sanford, Sanford Winery became a pioneer in the region and continues to innovate under the guidance of the Terlato family. The winery places a strong emphasis on sustainability, utilizing cover crops, natural water sources, and minimal intervention viticulture practices.
Crafted from one of California's most historic vineyards, the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard planted in 1971, this Pinot Noir boasts a vibrant red color in the glass. Planted in unique calcium-rich clay loam soils with fractured shale and chert, these own-rooted vines (meaning they grow on their own rootstock) are likely to express the singular character of this Sta. Rita Hills AVA estate. On the nose, it exudes earthy aromas of dried herbs, mingling with bright cherry and cranberry. Hints of floral notes and baking spices add complexity to this expressive Pinot Noir. The palate is silky smooth, framed by balanced acidity and ripe tannins, suggesting a lingering and enjoyable finish.
Brought up in 32% new French oak, the 2016 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard has a more earthy, reductive style that carries dark fruits, forest floor, underbrush, and leafy herb aromas and flavors. With medium body, good concentration, and integrated acidity, it's a promising wine yet needs 2-3 years of bottle age.
