Established in 1720 by Edmé Champy, Maison Champy is the oldest house in Burgundy, instrumental in building the region's international reputation for three centuries. With a history intertwined with French icons like Louis Pasteur and Gustave Eiffel, the Maison owns 21 hectares of organically farmed, HVE-certified vineyards across the Côte d'Or, focusing on Corton, Beaune, Savigny-les-Beaune, and Pernand-Vergelesses. Long-term partnerships also grant access to premium Côte de Nuits plots. Since 1999, winemaker Dimitri Bazas, with experience from iconic estates, has overseen production, driving organic conversion and vineyard expansion. Traditional Burgundian practices are followed: indigenous yeasts, whole cluster pressing for whites, plot-specific stem inclusion for reds, and 10-16 months in barrique, reflecting Champy's commitment to French savoir-faire.
Very beautiful dark garnet ruby color with purplish reflections. Good aromatic intensity, rich and complex nose, with aromas of stewed black berries (blackberry, blackcurrant), sweet spices, slightly smoked. A fresh and concentrated palate on red and black fruits, beautiful material with tannins present but coated. Nice concentration and material in the finish.
Here the menthol influence is no longer subtle, and it contributes a cherry cough drop-like character to the plum, violet and softly earthy nose. While the mid-palate of the nicely concentrated medium-bodied flavors is succulent and supple, the finish is firm and rustic though not especially austere. If this can add depth with time in bottle my rating could well be a bit too conservative.
