Phil and Chris Rose, initially lucerne farmers, pivoted to grape cultivation in 1978 after the 1970s oil crisis made their original crop uneconomical. Overcoming land use challenges, they hand-planted vineyards while raising a family. In 1991, they launched their own wine label, Wairau River. Their son Sam, who grew up immersed in the family business, later earned a winemaking degree and gained experience with top regional winemakers. Now, Sam leads the winemaking process at Wairau River, collaborating closely with his friend and fellow winemaker Nick Entwistle to produce award-winning Sauvignon Blanc and other wines.
This lush red wine features a lifted aroma of ripe cherries and spice. The body is soft and generous with delicate berry notes shadowed by subtle toasty oak. Fine, ripe tannins provide weight and structure, resulting in a long, seamless finish.
The 2022 Pinot Noir is all about sour cherry and fine, tea-like tannins in the mouth. While not being too complex, the wine is certainly pleasurable. A place for everything and everything in its place. Neat as a pin. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
