Turley Wine Cellars, founded in 1993 by former emergency room physician Larry Turley, has become a prominent producer of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah wines in California. Under the guidance of winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, the winery produces 50 different wines from over 50 vineyards across the state, many featuring vines dating back to the late 1800s. Turley's commitment to organic farming and focus on old vine vineyards reflects Larry's lifelong connection to agriculture and his passion for preserving California's winemaking heritage. The winery's expansion from its Napa Valley roots to sourcing grapes from numerous vineyards throughout California demonstrates its dedication to showcasing the diversity and quality of the state's terroir, particularly through its old vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah productions.
Their "Juvenile" Zinfandel is a unique blend that showcases the potential of younger vines from across California. Sourced from 27 vineyards in 11 counties, this wine features grapes from vines aged 6 to 25 years, carefully selected from some of Turley's best old vine sites. The 2022 vintage, set for release in Spring 2024, is fermented with native yeast and aged for 12 months in predominantly used oak barrels. With its bright cherry and berry notes, complemented by floral aromas and a lush texture, the Juvenile Zinfandel offers a fresh, vibrant expression of California Zinfandel at 15.2% alcohol. This wine represents Turley's commitment to preserving and showcasing the diversity of California's Zinfandel heritage, even in its younger plantings.
A jammy bomb of fruit, offering cherry pie and ripe raspberry flavors accented with toasty spice and briar notes as this energetic Zin zips along the zesty finish. Drink now through 2032.
The 2022 Zinfandel Juvenile is a remarkably expressive and over-performing iteration of this wine, composed of young vines from nearly three dozen sites across California. The nose combines sweet red fruits, roasted plums and leather with autumnal, spice-driven accents. The palate is medium-bodied with detailed layers of easygoing, succulent fruits. The finish is welcomely dustier and more structured than the nose and palate would suggest and concludes with a bright spine of quenching acidity.
