The Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Ursules" is a distinguished monopole wine from Louis Jadot's historic walled vineyard, a prized section of the "Vignes Franches" premier cru that has been in family hands since 1826. This elegant Burgundian red reveals itself through traditional vinification, with destemmed grapes undergoing a patient 3-4 week fermentation before maturing for 18 months in Cadus oak barrels. In the glass, it shows the refinement typical of its prestigious terroir, making it an ideal companion for both delicate and robust dishes. The wine pairs beautifully with everything from roasted salmon to hearty game meats, while showing particular affinity for classic Burgundian fare like boeuf bourguignon and expertly matches the rich character of local cheeses such as Cîteaux and Mont d'Or. Its versatility and breeding make it equally at home with simple roasted chicken or more elaborate preparations like osso bucco.

Wine Advocate: 92-94 Points

The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries, spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with sweet, powdery tannins and a long, spicy finish, this site, an enclave in Vignes Franches that's one of the house's emblematic wines, always performs well. (W. Kelley)

Winemaker Frédéric Barnier and his team have produced another strong portfolio chez Jadot, with a relatively abundant crop of charming, pure and demonstrative wines, with alcohol back in more normal territory after the highs of 2018, 2019 and 2020. As I've written before, in the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. A cold room also helps chill down any fruit that's too warm when it enters the winery. 2022 is also the second vintage of organic conversion for the Domaine Louis Jadot and the Domaine Gagey.

Burghound: 91-94 Points

Here a brooding and more restrained nose is spicier still with its blend of ripe red berries, soft earth and hint of oak. The rich, full-bodied and powerful medium-bodied flavors are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a sappy mouthfeel while buffering the firm tannic spine shaping the balanced and impressively persistent finish. This is excellent and also well-worth considering.

**The 2022 vintage in Burgundy, as described by Jadot's technical director Frédéric Barnier, was characterized by a hot and dry growing season saved by well-timed rain.** While the warm, dry conditions early in the season helped the region avoid frost damage, the lack of rainfall nearly led to a repeat of the extremely hot and dry 2003 vintage. Fortunately, a significant rainstorm at the end of June and a smaller one in mid-August provided crucial hydration for the vines, preventing water stress and leaf loss.  These rains, along with cool nights, allowed the grapes to retain freshness and acidity, resulting in wines that are remarkably balanced and drinkable, with good yields.  Barnier highlights the importance of the June rain, emphasizing its role in shaping the character of the vintage and preventing it from becoming overly concentrated. He is pleased with the quality of both the red and white wines, praising their balance, expression of terroir, and potential for aging.

Monopole. Cask sample.
Mid crimson. Very attractive hint of violets on the nose. Already pretty charming with its floral fruit and fine, well-managed tannins. One of the more obviously sweet wines. (JR)
