From century-old vines planted in 1902, Xavier Horiot's Les Perrieres vineyard represents a precious piece of Pommard's viticultural heritage. Following lutte raisonnée principles, Horiot tends to this remarkable 2.2-hectare plot with minimal intervention, allowing the ancient vines to express their natural concentration. These centenarian vines, with their deep root systems penetrating layers of limestone-rich soil, produce tiny berries of intense flavor and complexity, perfectly suited to Horiot's gentle winemaking approach.
The 2022 vintage demonstrates the profound elegance that old-vine Pinot Noir can achieve. Delicate aromas of fresh raspberry and red cherry blossom intermingle with subtle notes of warm spice and crushed stone. The palate reveals remarkable precision and refinement, showcasing the natural concentration from low-yielding ancient vines. Through careful oak integration and native yeast fermentation, the wine maintains its purity while developing a sophisticated structure that will continue to evolve beautifully over time.
An agreeably fresh and relatively bright nose is comprised by notes of both red and ark currant, earth and a suggestion of underbrush. The delicious, vibrant and beautifully detailed middleweight flavors flash only a touch of rusticity on the balanced and sneaky long finish. While this has the requisite stuffing to repay up to a decade of keeping, it could reasonably be approached after only 2 to 4 years.
The 2022 Pommard Les Perrières, which was due to be bottled soon after my visit, offers juicy black cherries and blueberry fruit on the nose. Simple but effective. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery-textured entry. Moderate depth, gentle grip with just a slight attenuation towards the finish. Fine, though, a Pommard I would drink in its first 7 or 8 years. (N. Martin)
