Burlotto is a family-owned winery in Verduno, Piedmont, Italy, with a long history of producing high-quality wines. The dream of the family has always been to share Barolo with the world, and they have been working towards this goal since the early 20th century. With a strong connection to the territory and a passion for winemaking, the Burlotto family has built a reputation for producing exceptional wines. Today, the winery is run by Gian Carlo Burlotto and his son Gianluca, who continue the family tradition with the brand Cascina Massara.
From the southeastern edge of the Barolo zone, this Nebbiolo emerges from Castelletto, a distinctive hill in Monforte that shares its geological heritage with neighboring Serralunga d'Alba through the mineral-rich Lequio Formation, where clayey marl soils alternate with sandy patches. The grapes, which experience the gentle rhythm of morning sun, afternoon winds, and evening calm, are hand-harvested and carefully transported in small boxes before being destemmed and gravity-fed into French oak vats for fermentation, where daily pump-overs and temperature-controlled maceration preserve the wine's character. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine ages in large French oak barrels for 20-33 months, then rests in bottle for at least 9 months after being bottled unfined and unfiltered, ultimately expressing what has become the site's emblematic personality: a statuesque body with powerful, determined character.
A youthful ruby hue, the 2020 Barolo Castelletto really takes things to the next level with aromas of framboise, violets, spice, pine, and rosemary. Medium-bodied, it has a weightless feel but good intensity and ripeness. With a linear drive, ripe tannins, and a long finish, this is a fantastic wine to enjoy over the coming 12-15 years. It comes quite close to the highest level in the range for this vintage.
The Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2020 Barolo Castelletto is a driven wine that sails across the senses with inner power and grit. There are bright, clean berry aromas with tart cassis, more red flower rather than blue flower (maybe geranium or heritage rose), with iron ore or ferrous mineral at the back. The bouquet is compact and tight, requiring more time to unfold. The structured mouthfeel reveals a spicy hint of white pepper. Castelletto remains an angular and powerful wine to hold in your cellar for now. Only 3,000 bottles were made. (M. Lerner)
The 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is a gorgeous, classically austere Barolo that is going to need time to soften. Dried herbs, flowers, mint, dried cherry and white pepper infuse the 2020 with tons of aromatic nuance. Readers will have to be patient, as the aromatics are tempting, but the acids and tannins are those of a very young, cutting Barolo.
