Torabhaig Distillery is the second licensed Single Malt Scotch Whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye, established nearly 200 years after the Excise Act of 1823 legalized whisky distilling in Scotland. Located in a restored 19th-century farmstead, the distillery benefits from the island's unique water, land, and climate, essential elements for producing robust island whisky. The building, constructed with stone from a nearby ruined castle, underwent a four-year restoration to accommodate modern distilling equipment while preserving its historical character. Torabhaig began operations in January 2017, equipped to produce whisky for the next two centuries.
Allt Gleann, the second release in The Legacy Series from Torabhaig Distillery, is named after one of the burns supplying water to the distillery. It represents an evolution from the 2017 inaugural release, featuring changes in ingredients and production methods. These include the addition of Laureate malted barley, the use of Safspirit M-1 yeast, and the incorporation of re-fill whisky barrels in maturation alongside first-fill bourbon barrels. The result is a slightly peatier and more complex whisky compared to its predecessor. Whisky expert Dave Broom praised its exceptional length for a young whisky and encouraged enthusiasts to try it without delay, noting the distillery's promising setup.
