The Chartreuse liqueur began as a mysterious "Elixir of Long Life" gifted to Carthusian monks in 1605. Though the complex recipe took over a century to decipher, a monk at the Grande Chartreuse monastery finally cracked the code in 1737. Since then, the monks have been the sole producers of this herbal liqueur, made with a secret formula known only to a select few.
The preparation of the Herbal Elixir requires several weeks and is done in three stages: distillation to obtain the aroma, maceration which gives the natural color and extraction which makes it possible to collect the beneficial properties of the 130 plants, flowers, bark, roots and spices that compose it.
