Sandlands Wines, founded by Tegan Passalacqua, is a boutique winery dedicated to reviving California's forgotten classic grape varieties. Focusing on vineyards with decomposed granite soils in lesser-known regions like Lodi and Contra Costa County, Sandlands emphasizes old, head-trained, dry-farmed, and own-rooted vines. Passalacqua, a Napa Valley native with extensive international winemaking experience and the Director of Winemaking at Turley Wine Cellars, employs minimal intervention techniques to showcase the unique terroir of these historic vineyards. The project, run by Tegan and Olivia Passalacqua, aims to tell the story of California's viticultural roots through wines made from varieties such as Carignane, Mataro, Cinsault, Chenin Blanc, and Trousseau.
The 2022 Red Table Wine (Contra Costa County) is a Carignane/Mataro blend from Oakley Road. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2022 is another fabulous wine in this range. Polished tannins wrap around a core black fruit, game, licorice, incense, dried flowers and gravel. Exotic floral overtones emerge with time in the glass. The 2022 is incredibly distinctive and delicious.
