This prestigious Médoc Grand Cru Classé, Château Talbot, epitomizes the excellence of the Saint-Julien appellation in Bordeaux. Nestled within a region boasting 11 classified growths, this esteemed estate spans an impressive 107 hectares of meticulously tended vineyards. The château's terroir is nothing short of exceptional, benefiting from a prime location on the banks of the Gironde estuary. Here, the vines flourish on elevated slopes composed of alluvial gravel, a geological gift transported over millennia by the Dordogne and Garonne rivers from the distant Massif Central and Pyrénées mountains. This unique terroir, combined with the estate's rich heritage and expert viticulture, sets the stage for wines of remarkable depth, complexity, and true Bordelais character.
This renowned Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé showcases Château Talbot's signature style, marrying longevity with immediate appeal. The wine boasts a generous, extroverted character that charms from youth, offering a palate draped in silky tannins and a graceful sweetness. Its complex profile unfolds with sophisticated notes of Havana tobacco and licorice, underpinned by a classic Bordeaux structure. Despite its depth and aging potential, Talbot remains remarkably approachable, presenting a racy disposition and a consistently pleasurable demeanor. This wine embodies the essence of refined Médoc, delivering a deliciously classic experience without a hint of austerity – a true testament to Talbot's enduring legacy and the exceptional terroir of Saint-Julien.
There's a real purity of fruit here with currant and blueberry aromas coming out in the glass. Full body, with fine tannins and a fresh and clean acidity. Very polished tannins. It's all about balance and drinkability here. Try in 2018.
The 2010 Talbot is much more backward on the nose compared to its peers, eventually revealing blackberry, briary and light floral scents, pretty but clearly requiring more bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite firm tannins. Cedar and graphite lend this a slight Pauillac-like personality, linear and correct with modest depth on the finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.
Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Talbot opens with maturing scents of fruitcake, Chinese five spice and cigar box plus hints of dried mint, pencil lead and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is pleasantly spicy, with a light grip of chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing savory.
62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot.
First bottle TCA. Second bottle: deeper colour and generally a more youthful aspect than the 2009. Dense, firm and restrained with a dark-fruit nuance. Solid tannic frame but no aggression, the tannins fine and backed by generous fruit. More freshness than the 2009 and overall better balance. Built for the long haul. (JL)
