Burlotto is a family-owned winery in Verduno, Piedmont, Italy, with a long history of producing high-quality wines. The dream of the family has always been to share Barolo with the world, and they have been working towards this goal since the early 20th century. With a strong connection to the territory and a passion for winemaking, the Burlotto family has built a reputation for producing exceptional wines. Today, the winery is run by Gian Carlo Burlotto and his son Gianluca, who continue the family tradition with the brand Cascina Massara.
From the northernmost vineyard in Barolo, this distinctive Nebbiolo from Verduno's iconic Monvigliero site reflects the microclimate influence of the nearby Tanaro river. The 2.02-hectare vineyard, planted in five phases between 1958 and 2015, sits in the hill's central amphitheater at 300 meters elevation, where fossilized Marls of Sant'Agata form distinctive layered sheets of silt, clay, and sand. Following traditional methods, the hand-harvested grapes undergo whole-cluster vinification with foot pressing in French oak vats, followed by two months of submerged cap maceration. The wine then matures in large Slavonian and Allier oak barrels for approximately three years before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, developing an elegant profile that captures Baudelaire's notion of "luxury, calm, and voluptuousness" with its Levantine smokehouse aromas and a pure, salty finish.
Usually one of the palest Barolos in the glass, it shows its typical wild-strawberry and peony aromas, together with sweet violets, cinnamon, burned plastic-like smokiness and vermouth-like intensity. Great concentration on the full-bodied palate with velvety, creamy tannins. Refreshing, slightly lifted acidity and am elegant, filigree finish. Drinkable now, but best in a decade.
Showing fine and delicate perfumes, the Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2020 Barolo Monvigliero (made with whole-cluster fermentation) opens to a hint of something exotic like Moroccan spice with candied orange, Arabian jasmine or tamarind chutney. This vintage is a little more immediate in character, with a long mid-palate that culminates with a chalky tannic finish. The Monvigliero is very elegant, even fragile, with an upward fruit crescendo. Production in this vintage is 9,000 bottles. (M. Lerner)
A wild beast, the medium ruby 2020 Barolo Monvigliero shows off a wild perfume in this vintage, with a rustic edge and lifted notes of menthol, orange zest, cinnamon, pomegranate, and saddle leather. It drives with vibrant energy on the palate, where all its components come together, with a chalky texture and a long finish. This spicy and slightly rustic wine from Burlotto is going to benefit from another year or two in bottle. Drink 2026-2040.
The 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is a gorgeous, classically austere Barolo that is going to need time to soften. Dried herbs, flowers, mint, dried cherry and white pepper infuse the 2020 with tons of aromatic nuance. Readers will have to be patient, as the aromatics are tempting, but the acids and tannins are those of a very young, cutting Barolo.
