Located in Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood, Widow Jane Distillery harnesses the exceptional mineral-rich limestone water from New York's historic Rosendale mines - the same quarries that provided the foundation stones for the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty. This pure, hard-yet-sweet water, naturally filtered through centuries-old limestone caverns 100 miles north of the distillery, serves as the distinctive fingerprint in every bottle they produce, connecting the spirit to the very bedrock of American architectural history.
The 2024 release of Black Opal represents Widow Jane's most ambitious creation - a masterful blend of 20-year-old bourbons finished in prized Mizunara oak casks. The rare Japanese oak imparts complex layers of incense and smoldering wood, while the limestone-rich proofing water enhances its luxurious mouthfeel. On the palate, waves of black strap molasses and crème brûlée give way to poached plum and brown butter, concluding with lingering notes of chocolate ganache and warm baking spices.
