Turley Wine Cellars, founded in 1993 by former emergency room physician Larry Turley, has become a prominent producer of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah wines in California. Under the guidance of winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, the winery produces 50 different wines from over 50 vineyards across the state, many featuring vines dating back to the late 1800s. Turley's commitment to organic farming and focus on old vine vineyards reflects Larry's lifelong connection to agriculture and his passion for preserving California's winemaking heritage. The winery's expansion from its Napa Valley roots to sourcing grapes from numerous vineyards throughout California demonstrates its dedication to showcasing the diversity and quality of the state's terroir, particularly through its old vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah productions.
Their Pesenti Vineyard Zinfandel showcases a unique expression of Paso Robles terroir from a certified organic estate vineyard planted in the 1920s. Located in the Willow Creek sub-AVA, this wine benefits from ancient marine calcareous soils that impart distinctive chalk and floral characteristics. The head-trained, dry-farmed vines, primarily Zinfandel with some Carignane and Grenache, are hand-harvested and fermented using native yeasts. Aged for 15 months in predominantly used oak barrels, the 2024 release offers an exuberant profile of ripe red fruits, spices, and a unique old-world Pinot-like finish. At 15.6% alcohol, this unfined and unfiltered wine exemplifies Turley's commitment to preserving historic vineyards and producing terroir-driven Zinfandels that reflect California's diverse winemaking heritage.
Medium ruby in the glass, the 2022 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard is refined and pure on the nose, leading with varietally classic aromas of yellow peach, wild red berry jam, touches of woodsmoke and tomato leaves and a mix of earth-driven, evergreen aromas. The palate clearly shows its warm-climate origins with its rich, concentrated, explosively perfumed red fruit flavors. It admirably retains precision despite this massive frame and is lined with fine-grained, generous tannins. The finish is led by peachy, fruit-driven perfume with just enough tangy acidity to prop up the long, juicy finish that calls you back to the glass.
A briar patch in a glass, this Zin is tightly focused and energetic, with flavors of wild berries, underbrush, espresso and pepper that build tension toward broad-shouldered tannins. Drink now through 2033. —T.F.
